At the age of 41, Anne Marie is not just a devoted teacher but also an ardent advocate for people with disabilities. Driven by her own experiences and through her active participation in the We are Able! initiative and the Communal Community Development Committee (CCDC), she's been instrumental in reshaping the community's approach towards inclusivity.

The We are Able! project (funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs), which promotes disability inclusive food security in six African countries — Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda, is now halfway its implementation. We talked to Peter Das of ZOA, who leads the Monitoring & Evaluation team, about the mid-term review, the hurdles, accomplishments and what's next.

In the week of 16 to 20 October 2023, the Micro Nutrient Forum was hosted in The Hague. Various types of stakeholders (donors, non-governmental organisations, private sector) came together at a location in the centre of the city to discuss the importance of nutritious food.

The We are Able! consortium participated in the 1-2 November conference ‘Shaping Feminist Foreign Policy’, organized by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA). The 2-day event included plenary sessions and workshops, attended by around 500 participants from all over the world.

The We are Able! programme conducts an annual meeting every year. The 2023 edition was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from Sunday 18 June to Saturday 24 June. The annual meeting was attended by around 40 participants from all countries of the programme.

Malachie Siboniyo always thought that he was not the same as others in his community in Burundi. He was born with a physical disability. He took part in the PIP (Integrated Agricultural Planning) through the We are Able! programme and changed his life.

Together with his six children and wife, Alfred (35) lives in Uriama Sub County in Uganda. For a long time, Alfred thought that he was unable to engage in serious farming activities because of his physical and visual disability.

The WaA! position paper is an exploration of the realities experienced by persons with disabilities in East and Central Africa. We delve into their daily challenges and examine how these adversities directly impact their food and livelihood security.

To give shape to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the We Are Able! Programme prioritizes the development of a Local Inclusion Agenda as a crucial cross- cutting tool to ensure disability inclusion at local level.
