During the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) celebration in The Hague, We are Able! colleagues Chandiga John and Siham Bolad met with Dutch Minister of Parliament Mr Don Ceder to highlight the urgent realities facing persons with disabilities affected by the war in Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n

Their discussion focused on the worsening humanitarian situation, especially for those fleeing to South Sudan, where persons with disabilities face significant barriers. Many lost their mobility devices during the conflict, making access to WASH facilities and food distribution centres extremely difficult. Conditions in refugee camps further limit inclusion in livelihood activities, pushing some to depend on tree-cutting for survival \u2014 a practice with long-term environmental impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John also raised concerns about cross-border gun control, which has increased intercommunal insecurity. He emphasised the need for stronger support for persons with disabilities, including mobility devices and livelihood assistance to help them rebuild their lives. Finally, he appealed for continued Dutch support to the We are Able! programme to strengthen OPDs in advocating for inclusive services in refugee and IDP camps.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
